On March 2, 2026, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, following multiple attacks from the US and Israel. This caused oil prices to rise globally. Many countries were impacted by this because they rely largely on the strait to obtain oil. US President Donald Trump pushed on social media for countries to help him fight for the strait. This was met with little or no help from allied nations. On April 7, 2026, Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz to most countries except for the USA. In retaliation to this decision by Iran, the US decided to set up a naval blockade on the strait.

This naval blockade intends to keep Iranian and Iranian affiliated ships carrying goods like oil from leaving. This is so far effective according to President Trump on social media. Many of his remarks on his social media site Truth Social has been proven to be a bluff or false. He has made multiple threats online like saying “A whole civilization will die tonight” in reaction to Iran not opening the Strait of Hormuz. Later that night after he said that, a ceasefire agreement was reached until Israel attacked Lebanon multiple days into the agreement.
