Music is an important outlet for all people, whether the audience or the creator. Many handle struggles through the lens of music.

“Music means a lot to me,” Student Tiffany Nguyen says. “Green Day is my favorite band. They express their ideals and emotions a lot in the music.”

While punk music is very popular amongst people who feel something with their music as it caters to those with similar ideals, other genres utilize this—most notably pop.

Famed artist Taylor Swift expresses herself through her music. Whether it be songs about exes or newfound love, people far and wide love Swift for her ability to make her listeners feel something and relate to her music.

Along with Swift, many artists who talk about love are popular with students and social media. Tyler, The Creator’s song “See You Again” has made a continuous comeback this year, 2023. Tyler, The Creator covers love in this song and it even turned into a trend between friends and lovers alike. The song and its lyrics have brought people together.

Another example of music speaking to people can be found in the Artist Mitski.

Student Alexie Black, who has had Mistki as her top artist for years. shares her thoughts. “The way Mistki writes about her emotions comforts me,” Black said. “Even if most people only know her popular songs. those songs have important lyrics. I’m happy to see people enjoy them as much as me.”

Music can provide a place for like-minded people to express themselves and find a home in each other. Music brings people together. No matter what language the base of music is instruments and the feelings those sounds bring.

Music from Vietnam can connect with a person from Italy and vice-versa. It is beautiful and is an amazing form of art and communication.

“I think music made me come out of my shell and have connected with many people through it,” Sanchez said when asked if music helped her connect with others. “I have made many friends over our love for music and certain genres. I feel like it has helped me mentally because of the impact it has on my relationships.”
