The movie “10 Things I Hate About You” is a classic teen rom-com movie from 1999 starring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larissa Oleynik, and more.
The movie follows two sisters who are complete opposites in their love lives. Kat, who is strong, smart, hard-headed, and brutally honest, is pessimistic and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. Her sister Bianca is popular, pretty, and preppy, is concerned with the “high school experience,” and wants to date a boy. Their strict dad sets a rule that Bianca can’t date until Kat dates. The movie follows the journey of Kat falling for Patrick, but there are a few bumps in the road that Kat wasn’t aware of.
This movie is widely loved by many teenagers today, and Jazmine Castrejon and London Carter shared their judgment on this film. I asked the girls what their opinions are about several different topics about the movie.
When asking about how they felt about the movie overall, they both had positive things to say. Castrejon exclaims, “I genuinely love the movie so much. It is my absolute favorite. This movie taught me the kind of love that I would look for in a guy (minus the bet, of course).” Carter expressed her enjoyment of the movie by stating, “I really love the movie! I think it’s such a feel-good movie that I like to watch to get comfort. I think it’s a really cute story overall, I really love the characters as well.”
The next topic we discussed was the plot and the storyline, which was, “ I thought that it was very predictable at times but still super sweet,” and “I don’t think it’s a very complex storyline, but I really like how the characters interact! I think that in this story it has good complex characters in an interesting easy to easy-to-understand storyline.”
Along with the storyline comes character development. Throughout the movie, many characters have changed in their personalities and as a whole. Castrejon said, “I absolutely LOVE it!!! Kat becomes softer but still very bold, and Patrick also becomes soft for Kat but still cold towards everyone else.” and Carter shared, “I think it’s interesting to see Heath Ledger’s charcuterie develop feelings for Julia Stiles character which overall changes how he acts wanting to change for her, which is always cute.”

After expressing their opinions on character development, they revealed their own personal favorite characters and why. Castrejon’s favorite character is “Kat because I can connect more with her on some many things, especially when it comes to being judged by other siblings or even just my demeanor. People think I’m some kind of rude person, but only the closest people to me know that I’m not.” Carter reveals, “My favorite character is Cameron because of how cute he acts with Bianca. I think it’s super sweet how he treats her and how he wants to get the girl. I also really like this actor.”
With every movie that someone loves, there is always a character that just strikes a nerve. For Castrejon and Carter they both agreed that character was Joey because, “he is stuck up, self-centered, a narcissist, a complete jerk, and overall just so annoying.” and “probably the guy that tries to get with Bianca … it’s clear that he doesn’t treat woman very well and treats them as objects. And his character is also very, very annoying…”
Anyone who has seen this movie knows that sisters Kat and Bianca are opposites, so I found out what team the girls were on. They both agreed they are Team Kat. Castrejon said, “I like Kat more because she’s my favorite character.” Carter agreed when she said, “Probably Kat because I like her character, I also like how she dresses and acts. I think it’s funny. But she also developed character development.”
Finally, I got their overall rating of the movie and if they would recommend this movie to other people. Castrejon’s response was: “a 10/0 and would definitely recommend it.” Carter’s answer was, “10/10 it’s my favorite movie ever. I would totally recommend this movie if you wanna have a good time watching a movie.”
Overall, this is a great movie that I personally think most teenagers would enjoy watching and these girls would agree with me.
