The Broncos finally ended their 16 game losing streak against the Chiefs on Sunday night football. The game started off slow but improved for the Broncos as time progressed. The Broncos defense was strong throughout the game. The Broncos offense also helped the defense by keeping the ball or scoring to increase their lead.
“By no means [was it] perfect today, but we made enough plays to win the game, not to mention the special teams plays that were made, and what a heck of a job by our offense to hold the ball, run the clock and give us some limited possessions while we’re out there. I think that played a role, too. It was just a complete effort today. I’m really proud with how the guys battled and played,” Jeffery Simmons, defensive end, said.
The Broncos defense was wild with five takeovers that started in the second quarter. The inside linebacker Josey Jewell went to tackle Valdez-Scantling when the ball was knocked out and Simmons went to recover the fumble which, led to Russell Wilson being able to connect with Jerry Jeudy for a 11-yard touchdown. The connection with Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes really puts their offense together but against the broncos that connection didn’t work as well.
The cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted a throw with the intended receiver being Travis Kelce. Before the halftime outside linebacker Baron Browing hit Mahomes’ arm and that sent the ball flying in the air backwards. This helped the outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper beat Donavan Smith the Chiefs offensive tackle to the ball for the third take away for the Broncos. The Chiefs Patrick Mahomes did have the flu during this game while taking these tough losses during the game.
“Just stomach stuff, you know. It is what it is.” said Mahomes.
Mahomes says that he felt ill Saturday night but felt better in the morning. He wanted to go out on the field and play to the best of his abilities. Mahomes says that his illness didn’t effect his performance on the field. “Obviously I got caught turning around too many times. Our offensive line is trying to do whatever they can to give me time, and so just obviously you just got to try to find a way to maneuver myself out of the pocket to get a throw downfield.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said, “We didn’t execute the way we needed to. I gotta go back and look at the things that I called.”
“It’s an important game for us. It wasn’t streak-driven. It was important for us to play well before the bye week. Getting our third win–we dug ourselves in a hole. Obviously, we’re playing a good team… There were a lot of things to look at that were positive. We’re going to play in bigger games than that, but it is a division game, and I am glad we won,” said Sean Payton, Broncos head coach.
