In my opinion the best movies were from the 2000s. Specifically the Rom-Coms of that time had the most iconic storylines and some of the best actors. Some people could argue that some of these aren’t rom-coms. But I classify a rom-com by it being centered around a relationship. Which all of these check off. Here is my list of the top ten rom coms.
10 Things I Hate About You is one of the most iconic rom coms of the 90s. It stars Julia Stiles (Kat Stratford) and Heath Ledger (Patrick Verona). This is a classic enemies to lovers storyline that is easy to love. The film is about a boy named Cameron James (Joseph Gordan-Levitt) who is fighting to date the girl of his dreams, Bianca Stratford (Larissa Oleynik). But then he finds out she is not allowed to date unless Kat Stratford can find someone to date. This movie takes the number one spot because I love how the characters are written and I just love the movies dynamic. Kats character is also such a unique character, She is the polar opposite of her sister Bianca. Her reactions to the things Patrick does throughout the film are so realistic and interesting it adds layers of character that seem important but plausible.
How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days is a staple movie. I think there’s a trend with the word 10. I’m going to be honest. This movie gives so much second hand embarrassment just from the plot of the movie. This movie is about two magazine writers, Andy Anderson (Kate Hudson) and Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey). Andy is tasked to write a section of the newspaper article titled “How to lose a guy in 10 days” where she has to date a guy then lose him in 10 days, in order to tell girls what not to do when dating a guy. Ben wants an opportunity to run the section of jewelry in the magazine. So he proves this by saying that he can make a girl fall in love with him in 10 days. This movie takes the number two spot because it is just such a good feeling comfort movie. It is unapologetically funny and heartfelt.
The Notebook is one of the best great love stories in cinematic history. It is such an emotional story being depicted between Ally Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling). This movie is about two 17 year olds that fall in love. They are eventually torn apart due to living two completely different lives. Eventually meeting up again after seven years of being apart. This movie relies on the fact that soulmates can be anyone. It doesn’t matter if they have the same status as you or not. If you love the other person you should be able to push through the tough and make it work. These are two very lovable characters, even though they have their flaws. This movie is solely one of my favorites because it with no doubt can make me cry because of how emotional it is. You can really fall in love with these characters throughout the film.
Me Before You Absolutely destroyed me. This movie is one of the most soul crushing rom coms I have ever endured in watching. This movie is about a disabled man named William Traynor (Sam Claflin). His parents hire a caretaker named Louisa Clarke (Emilia Clarke). They eventually fall in love. This is an Enemies to Lovers film. The ending of this movie is so emotional, heartfelt, and sad. I’ve never cried so hard during a movie before. Their love story is one of my favorites by far. The contrast between their two characters is so interesting to me. She has such a bubbly personality while he tends to be more stone cold and kept to himself. If you feel like having a good cry I definitely recommend this movie.
This is my favorite horror movie. No joke this movie is the most gut wrenching rom coms I’ve ever watched. La La Land is about an aspiring actress named Mia Dolan (Emma Stone). She meets a man named Sebastian Wilder (Ryan Gosling). They face conflict within their life and relationship. One of my favorite parts about this movie is that it is realistic to relationship dynamics. Meaning that it won’t necessarily end up good or end up together. For the moment that that person was in your life was needed and special. Another reason I love this movie is the way this movie was filmed. The shots, the color schemes, and the outfits really add something to this movie that many movies don’t have. It is also a musical which can be very fun to watch. I recommend that you watch this movie at least once in your life.
500 Days of Summer is a story of two people named Tom Hansen (Joseph Godon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel). This is a story of Love, miscommunication, and heartbreak. Tom falls head over heels for his Coworker Summer. She agrees to have a casual relationship with Tom but it ends up driving him absolutely crazy. A lot of times in movies you can pick which side of a disastrous relationship to be on. But in this movie you really cant pick on. You can understand both sides of this relationship. The hopefulness of something you cant have with a certain person is understandable. But summer stated exactly what she wanted out of this relationship with Tom from the start. So who’s really in the wrong? It’s for you to decide.
Flipped is one of the most feel-good movies I’ve ever watched. It’s so nostalgic. Childhood crushes, middle school, childhood wonder, it’s all there. This is one of the more peculiar rom coms because it’s based around two 13 year olds. Bryce Loski (Callan McAuliffe) and Juli Baker (Madeline Carroll) are two neighbors. Juli is so in love with Bryce. They go through differences in family and personality issues. The reason Flipped is one of my favorites is some of the topics it covers throughout the movie. It has such a wholesome love between the two main characters throughout the movie. It can make you cry and laugh throughout the movie. It’s a perfect movie for family movie night.
27 Dresses is an absolute cult classic. I’ve never met one person that doesn’t absolutely fall in love with this movie. 27 Dresses follows Jane (Katherine Heighl), a hopeless romantic who has been a bridesmaid 27 times but has never been a bride herself. She has been secretly in love with her boss for years, so she is devastated when he falls for her younger sister, but a cynical journalist, Kevin (James Marsden) covering weddings challenges her to put herself first. Through this film, Jane realizes her worth, finds love, and finally gets to wear a wedding dress for herself. This movie is such a satisfying watch. It’ll make you angry with Jane. Jane is a lovable character who struggles to see what she can attain. I recommend this movie 100%.
A Walk to Remember is one of those movies that sticks with you long after it ends. It starts off as a classic bad-boy-gets-with-good-girl story, but there’s so much more plot and love to it. Landon(Shane West) and Jamie’s(Mandy Moore) relationship feels real and raw, showing how love can change people in ways they never expected. Mandy Moore and Shane West have amazing chemistry, making every emotional moment hit even harder. Sure, it’s a bit predictable, but that doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking and emotional when the big twist comes. When the credits roll, you’re left with a tear stained face, sadness and hope, which is what makes this movie so special.
50 First Dates is a sweet and funny rom-com with a unique twist that makes it more than just another love story. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have amazing chemistry, and their characters, Henry and Lucy, make you want them together the whole way through. The idea of Lucy losing her memory every night could have made the movie depressing, but instead, it turns into a heartfelt story about love, patience, and dedication. Henry’s daily attempts to make Lucy fall for him again are both hilarious and touching, showing how love isn’t always easy but can be worth the effort. The movie balances comedy and emotion really well, with plenty of goofy moments but also some surprisingly deep ones. The supporting cast, especially Rob Schneider and Sean Astin, add extra laughs, even if some of the jokes are a little over-the-top. Overall, 50 First Dates is a charming and feel-good movie that reminds you love is about showing up every single day.
