The Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in a 40-22 victory on Superbowl Sunday.
This exciting matchup started with a Jalen Hurts rushing a one yard touchdown giving the Eagles a early 7-0 lead. This momentum was followed up in the second quarter with a 48-yard field goal from Jake Elliot increasing the lead by three.
Just when things were looking good for the Eagles, one minute later, rookie sensation Cooper DeJean intercepted the ball running back 38 yards for a pick six. The Eagles finished the first half off strong with a 12 yard passing touchdown to A.J. Brown gave the Eagles a massive 24-0 lead.
The halftime show this year starred Pulitzer Prize winning rapper Kendrick Lamar and Grammy winning R&B singer SZ. This performance was one of the best halftime shows in recent history with subtle messages throughout the performance portraying a very powerful message of challenging the stereotype of rap music being too loud and “ghetto”. With Samuel L. Jackson dressing up as Uncle Sam, his character satirically warned viewers to not do anything reckless or ghetto. Rather than submitting to Uncle Sam’s request; however, Lamar kept performing tracks that are true to him and his roots.
Coming out of this big halftime show, the Eagles had to match the intensity that was on the field, and they did just that with a 27 yard field goal by Jake Elliot. This was soon followed by 46 yard passing touchdown to DeVonta Smith increasing the lead to a staggering 34-0. The Chiefs responded with a 23 yard passing touchdown to DeAndre Hopkins hoping to start a comeback. This was short lived, however, with 48 yard and 50 yard field goals in the 4th quarter increasing the Eagles score to 40 – 6.
With three minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Chiefs attempted to band together with a seven yard passing touchdown by Deandre Hopkins, and a 50 yard passing touchdown to Xavier Worthy. While impressive, it was not enough and the Eagles took home the victory in Superbowl LIX and the Vince Lombardi trophy.
This marks the second Superbowl won by the Eagles in franchise history with the last win being in 2018 over Tom Brady and the Patriots. Star player Jalen Hurts attributed the success in Sunday’s game to the defense saying, “Defense wins championships. We saw how they played today. We saw the difference they made in the game. They gave us opportunities, gave us short fields. And we’re able to do what we do. We’ve always said it’s about being able to win in different ways. We’ve been dominant in the run game. We’ve been efficient in the passing game. We’ve just done what needed to be done.”
That wraps up the NFL postseason, and now the seven month wait for the next game starts. In the meantime, fans can catch up on other sports including basketball and baseball. The NFL season will be back before we know it.
