What are Team Captains?
The leaders and examples both on and off the court. Team Captains are those who can take control of a situation and be able to keep the team level-headed. Someone less formal than a coach, but can still guide the team in the right direction. The Girls Volleyball Team Captains, Aubrey Prior and Chloe Heiner represent exactly that.

Aubrey Prior shares a couple words on what she believes a captain is. “A captain is someone who can lead, and lead properly without doing it in a way in which it doesn’t come off feeling like they’re better than someone else.” As a captain, you’re the runner up in control and responsibility below the coach and the position really does make a difference in a team. Without a good leader, there’s no person that represents the team or to help with something that a teammate doesn’t feel comfortable going straight to the higher-up.
Chloe Heiner, our other Team Captain embodies the responsibility of being a leader. What Chloe thinks a captain should be is,” Being someone who teammates are able to turn to them and trust them to do their job without hesitation.” And adding onto her definition she also shared,”Another thing is just being there for them, I think that, that’s super important just to make sure that everyone’s doing good mentally while also being open for the girls to come to me.”
What Makes Them the Captains?
So many active traits go into being someone that all the girls can feel comfortable going to, and to trust that they are there to push everyone to become the best players they can be. Being the example is a big responsibility, and some key attributes that make these girls the “examples” are the ability to lead the game, keeping a level-head, and remaining patient.

Chloe believes that she is a good captain from her experience and her connections to all the girls on the team. “I’m someone that the girls on the team can like look up to, and I can be a role model for them and they can come to me whenever they need help with anything and also don’t have to worry about being judged,” Chloe shares.
Aubrey is an amazing example of how a person in leadership is able to show compassion and consideration to everyone, while also being able to flip the switch and give tough love when it’s needed. “I think I just want them to feel comfortable and really form like true connections and friendships with each and every one of the girls on so that’s how I kind of hold my captaincy and play my part as Captain.”
