Rising star Tyla has earned a worldwide audience with her hit single, “Water”. The song, which was released in 2023, entered the top 10 in 16 different countries. Tyla made her first in-person appearance for the inaugural Grammy Award for her song “Water”, she earned a nomination for a BRIT Award and more. Tyla is the youngest-ever African artist to receive a Grammy Award.
Tyla has gained lots of recognition and good feedback as an addition to the music industry. Tyla’s debut single “Getting Late”, was self-released after finishing high school in late 2019. This production featured Kooldrink and was ultimately a national success, giving her the first bit of fame. “Getting Late” was filmed by Tyla’s manager periodically throughout the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Along with the song being released, the accompanying music video was released in January 2021.
In the Best African Music Performance Category, Tyla won the Grammy’s of 2024 for her song “Water”. Tyla accepted the award at the 66th Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony. Tyla says in an interview with Douglas Markowitz, “I never thought I’d say I won a GRAMMY at 22 years old.” On the contrary, with the other competition of other successful and more established Afrobeat artists, “Water” is undeniably the best song to win this award.
On March 22, 2024, Tyla released her debut album TYLA, . ‘Art’ served as the lead single for this album and was released after her worldwide hit, “Water”. The album explores several varieties of sounds while staying true to her true roots: Afrobeats. Both the album and “Art” were released in tandem with each other. It was produced by Ari PenSmith, Sammy Soso, Mocha, and Believe. The release of the album was accompanied by a music video for ‘Art’ that premiered on YouTube on the same day as the release date.
Tyla has been gaining support steadily from her fanbase and moving forward. Junior, Kenna Walthall comments, “ These songs are very similar in sound, but you’ll know which song is which.” Tyla’s impact on the music industry will surely continue to thrive at this point.
